Ethan Dawes Presents

The lowest form of photography

"The Lowest Form of Photography"

Photographer Ethan Dawes finds an uncommon angle to capture people, places and parties in "The Lowest Form of Photography," a new solo show in New Orleans' Uptown neighborhood. With a flash of William Eggleston, these large-scale snaps—all unedited, all shot on handheld point-and-shoots—stand in stark contrast to the cropped, filtered photos filling our feeds.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Ethan Dawes has been a multi-disciplinary artist since he first started touring as a member of the electronic group Super Mash Bros. Since then he has built a career chasing creative whims. Everything from film and television to photography, Dawes attempts to find the best medium for whatever story he is trying to tell. He currently lives in New Orleans.

The title of the show comes directly from a quote the artist heard while someone was reviewing his portfolio. “Concert photography is maybe the lowest form of photography, second to kids birthdays and weddings.”

This entertained Dawes, considering much of his work is concert photography from his time spent touring with bands such as Mini Mansions and Arctic Monkeys. Instead of balking at it, he decided to lean into it. After thinking long and hard—concert photography, birthdays, weddings…these are the highest forms of photography, because they are the most photographed things—by the general public. Ethan figured it’s the perfect title for a show that aims to display people and places in all forms, high and low.
